Western Building Group Installs OKO Skin System on Transit Center – First in USAkwheelock
Western Building Group LLC (WBG) located in Mesa, Arizona completes a first in the USA installation of a naturally weather, flame and insect resistant material used widely on European projects. OKO Skin is manufactured by Reider Group based in Austria, EU is a thin-walled, slat-sized concrete panel that requires little to no maintenance or coating requirement. Western Building Group installed the new material on the Desert Sky Transit Center in Phoenix Arizona.
The Desert Sky Transit Center utilizes a European rain screen at the 5,800 square foot perimeter façade. The OKO Skin system is a cementitious plank impervious to moisture, insects, and the Arizona sun providing excellent protection of the canopy. Western Building Group installed the complete weather barrier system, sub-framing and the OKO Skin panel system along with custom color matched copings and trims. The variation of color is achieved with differing levels of sandblasted surface then applied randomly in a staggered pattern.
Desert Sky is a key transit point for the City of Phoenix public transportation system. Built on a 4.2 acre parcel adjacent to Desert Sky Mall in west Phoenix Arizona, USA, the Center serves 7 public transit routes including three of the top 10 most used routes. The structure replaced a temporary installation and will serve the residential and commercial area for many years. Haydon Building Corp was the general contractor.
